The civic ‘planning & exhibition center’ is a new and increasingly common typology found in Chinese cities large and small. The lush Dapeng peninsula in the eastern part of Shenzhen municipality is expected to be transformed into an eco-minded resort area for the region. FCHA was commissioned to propose a new planning and exhibition hall for Dapeng’s local government complex that would allow residents to see and engage with the planning process.
Slated to occupy a central location on the site, a non-directional, open form would be most appropriate for the new building. Maintaining visibility from other areas of the site was important, so the mass of the building was manipulated to maximize programmatic space while responding to the context. The interior is defined by sweeping exhibition spaces anchored by a rigid structural core that houses closed-functions like conference rooms and media space. The building will be topped by an office suite and an expansive roof terrace with views of the surrounding mountains. I was responsible for the concept, design development, modeling, and rendering of the proposal.
