Suburban Overlay

The goal of this studio was to gain a greater understanding of how suburbs function and purpose solutions to the nascent phenomena of suburban blight. A run-down area of suburban Columbus, OH was selected to test the re-thinking of building and planning codes in a way that encourages more vibrant and pedestrian-friendly development served by mass transit. Where New Urbanist-style strategies would prescribe increased density after mass demolition, this proposal seeks to preserve the most adaptable structures and enhance opens space with the insertion of landscape right of ways between parcels. Frontage is key, with new structures required to front either 100% of the street and 25% of the predestrian right of way, or 25% of the street and 100% of right of way.
